AutoCorrect to the Rescue!

You may have noticed when typing along in a Word document that some misspelled words are automatically corrected. The wonderful Word feature that does this for you is called AutoCorrect.

For example, if you were to type the word the as teh, AutoCorrect will automatically correct the word to read the. However, if you mistype a word that is not in the regular dictionary or in the AutoCorrect dictionary, then you will see a red squiggly line below the word. So, if I mistype the word newsletter to read “newletter” a red squiggly line appears.

In this lesson, you will learn how to add unrecognized words into your AutoCorrect dictionary.

1.Open Word 2010.

2. Find a word in your document that has a red squiggly mark underneath the word.

3. Right-click on the word and the following shortcut menu will appear.

4. Roll your mouse over the word AutoCorrect. A separate shortcut menu will pop up listing the possible corrections of the word in question.

5. Click on the correct spelling that you would like the Word AutoCorrect feature to use every time this particular word is unrecognized.

That’s how easy it is!

In a future blog, I will talk about how to take this AutoCorrect feature a step further. If you have long phrases to include in your document or you need to reference a long company name or department name, why not turn those text intensive items into an AutoCorrect entry that will increase your typing productivity and save you time and frustration in the long run.
